Boston Area Veterans First in Massachusetts to Have New Option for Companion Pet Adoption

Not-for-profit partners with Quincy Animal Shelter and Quarry Hills Animal Hospital to help U.S. veterans honorably adopt and care for companion pets

Quincy, MA, March 25, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Pets for Patriots, Inc., a not-for-profit that connects shelter pets with service and veteran members of the United States military, is partnering with Quincy Animal Shelter to place hard-to-adopt dogs and cats into loving military homes. Quarry Hills Animal Hospital will offer discounted veterinary care to animals adopted through the Pets for Patriots program.

“For every day a pet is in our shelter, it costs us approximately $30, and more if they need medical care,” says Sandra Morse, Quincy Animal Shelter Director. “We quickly saw the potential, through Pets for Patriots, to find adult dogs and cats permanent homes with service members, and provide a better quality of life for both the pet and the new owner.”

Quarry Hills Animal Hospital will extend an ongoing 10% discount off all veterinary fees for any pet adopted through the Pets for Patriots program. To reduce the costs of purchasing pet food, supplies, toys and other essentials, the charity provides direct financial support to veterans who join its program and honorably adopt eligible pets from Quincy Animal Shelter.

“Quarry Hills Animal Hospital is pleased to join the Pets for Patriots program,” says Dr. Judie Paulauski, owner and chief veterinarian. “It’s a well established clinical fact that animals can play an important role in providing owners not only companionship, but help coping with life back home after active duty. A loving home for these shelter pets may tend to have other benefits for the owner, such as increased physical activity and lower blood pressure.”

Individuals are welcome from all United States armed forces and at any stage of their careers: active, reserve, retired or veteran, as well as those transitioning to civilian life. Eligible pets must meet one of three criteria: an adult dog or cat (two years and older), dogs over 40 pounds regardless of age, or special needs dogs and cats. Joining Pets for Patriots is entirely free to veterans.

Morse sees the potential for Pets for Patriots to help the shelter accelerate the adoption of those pets most often overlooked. “Currently, we’re able to place about 500 pets each year. Through our partnership with Pets for Patriots, we hope to provide forever homes to even more loving animals with the many military personnel in our area.”

“We encourage all veterans in the Quincy and South Boston community to experience the unique joys of companion pet adoption and the benefits of joining our free program, including high-quality, discounted veterinary care and financial assistance to make pet food, supplies and basics more affordable,” says Beth Zimmerman, founder and executive director of Pets for Patriots, adding, “We’re proud to have Quincy Animal Shelter and Quarry Hills Animal Hospital as our first partners in the great state of Massachusetts,”

Those interested in the program must first apply through Pets for Patriots and provide proof of their military service or honorable discharge. Approval typically takes a day or two, after which veterans can visit the adoption specialists at Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester for assistance in choosing their new best friend, and Henrietta Animal Hospital for high-quality, reduced cost veterinary care.
