GreaterGood Network Visitors Decide on $75,000 in Grants for Petfinder.com Animal Shelters

Seattle, WA, March 26, 2011 --(PR.com)-- In 2011, GreaterGood Network's The Animal Rescue Site $300,000 Shelter+ Challenge allows visitors to the website to select Petfinder.com shelters and rescue groups to receive grants to help feed and care for animals. The first round of voting, which ended March 20, gave $75,000 to 68 shelters in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica this month.

"This program, sponsored since 2008 by The Animal Rescue Site, has been a wonderful opportunity for Petfinder.com members of all sizes," said Liz Neuschatz, director of the Petfinder.com Foundation. More than $675,000 has been distributed to Petfinder.com members since the Challenges began at the GreaterGood Network website.

Active members of the Petfinder.com are eligible to win grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 from January through December in 2011. TheAnimalRescueSite.com[tm] has pledged a total of $300,000 to be given to winning groups through the year.

In the first round of voting, Villalobos Rescue Center of Santa Clarita, CA, won the $5,000 grand prize. Other winning shelters and rescue groups received grants ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 for regional awards, stories about their groups, and other categories.

In addition, The Animal Rescue Site's "Click to Give" program, Gifts That Give More program, and shopping at TheAnimalRescueSite.com store provides nearly $1 million a year to animal rescue groups across the United States and the world. The organization recently announced more than $175,000 to go to animal rescue groups in Japan following the recent earthquake and tsunami there.

The popular Challenge grants are the only grants whose recipients are decided by visitors to the website. Each day during one of four voting periods, people can cast votes online for their favorite organization. Any active shelter or rescue group registered with Petfinder.com can participate in the Shelter+ Challenges, a free opportunity that helps animal rescue organizations receive extra funding. Members and the public are encouraged to click and vote daily during the Challenge—it is free to participate and only takes a minute of their time.

A complete list of all winners in the current and past Challenges can be found at www.TheAnimalRescueSite.com (click on the tab that says Shelter+ Challenge). Details of the remaining three voting rounds of the 2011 $300,000 Shelter+ Challenge also are available on the website.
