New Release Tells Story of One Athlete’s Journey with Open-Heart Surgery; Dog Ear Publishing Releases Book by Ellen Charnley

This is the story of the author's discovery that she had been living with a congenital heart defect for 41 years, training and competing in triathlons with a heart that was slowly failing. It’s also the story of her recovery and desire to compete in an Ironman competition. She undergoes open-heart surgery just eight months before the Ironman competition.

Las Vegas, NV, March 31, 2011 --(PR.com)-- “I open my eyes, and the sense of relief is overwhelming, just to wake up and know that my heart did, after all, ‘restart.’” Thus begins this compelling memoir, started on the author’s flight home one week after open-heart surgery. It’s the story of her discovery that she had been living with a congenital heart defect for 41 years, training and competing in triathlons with a heart that was slowly failing. It’s also the story of her recovery and desire to compete in an Ironman competition.

Ellen signed up for the Arizona Ironman in November 2009, a year before the event, a grueling contest of 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of biking and a 26.2-mile marathon. She has outpatient knee surgery so she can compete in all portions of the race. Temporary vision loss during a triathlon leads to tests that show she needs to see specialists at the Cleveland Clinic. A world-renowned doctor performs open-heart surgery to repair numerous holes in the wall of her heart, which looks like Swiss cheese.

Despite the operation’s success, recovery is slow and painful as Ellen begins training again. The story builds until it’s race day for the Ironman – a mere eight months after her life-changing operation. Ellen faces the challenge with all the courage she has developed while healing, but will it be enough?

The author, a chartered accountant who lives in Las Vegas, is an avid triathlete, competing in triathlons locally and internationally. This English-born athlete has lived with her husband in London, Bermuda, San Francisco and Hawaii. She hopes this book inspires anyone facing surgery or attempting an Ironman competition.
