Hawaiian Mermaids to Make a Splash in Las Vegas

With the soon to be released Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean, mermaids are emerging in the most unlikely places. This August 2011, mermaids from all the oceans will be attending the World Mermaid Awards.

Las Vegas, NV, May 14, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Mermaids are popping up in the most unlikely places. As Carol Memmont, USA TODAY writes: "Mermaids surface as the next big thing. From books to movies to blogs to gatherings, mermaids are making a big splash in popular culture this summer." And she is right. One of the many attendees at MERCON is the author Kohana Au, showcasing the latest release of Tales of the Mermaids of Waiahuakua - Those of the Sea.

Since the time of the great voyages from Tahiti to Hawaii, the mermaid has been a part of the legend and lore. There are many tales of Hawaiian Mermaids dating back as far as when the first voyagers from Kahiki ventured forth upon the waters of the Pacific to populate Hawaii…the land of green-backed and mottled seas. The 1st edition of Tales of the Mermaids of Waiahuakua -Those of the Sea, is a collection of traditional Hawaiian creation and romantic legends involving the mermaid. The book is beautifully and artfully illustrated. These legends include stories from Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa, Tonga, the Marquesas’ as well as the Maori of New Zealand.
