Hoboken, NJ, April 23, 2011 --(PR.com)-- On April 27, Stevens Institute of Technology hosts its annual Senior Projects Expo, a showcase of the senior year design projects of the graduating seniors from the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering and Science, the Howe School of Technology Management, and the School of Systems and Enterprises.

“Senior Design is a culminating activity of the curriculum and allows students to apply the knowledge they have acquired over four years to address a significant challenge in areas of engineering, science, computer science, and technology marketing and management.” says Dr. Keith Sheppard, Associate Dean of Engineering and Science. “Simultaneously, the students are able to integrate their broad-based classroom learning into a career-oriented project that provides a real-world experience.”

Senior Design is a capstone learning experience for Stevens undergraduates. Working together over the course of an academic year, teams tackle a practical problem initiated by a faculty member or quite often an external sponsor. This symbiotic relationship equips students with professional skills and experience while allowing sponsors to explore areas or concepts they perhaps are unable or unwilling to direct resources to at the time and in return provide real-world challenges to the students. Sponsors typically include alumni, faculty collaborators, and companies that frequently hire Stevens graduates, providing an opportunity for those organizations to cultivate relationships on campus and discover new talent.

Projects premiering on April 27 will involve a range of disciplines and scales, including: alternative energy projects from microscopic reactors to wave-energy platforms; vehicles from airplanes to cars to submersibles; and biomedical applications for the surgeon, battlefield medic, and handicapped shopper. Multi-disciplinary teams, including Stevens Solar Decathlon team, are bridging gaps between engineering disciplines and engineering management to effectively bring sustainable technology and design to market.

Major attractions at Senior Design Expo are the interactive demonstrations, prototypes on display, and informative talks about research projects and results, generating an exciting, energetic atmosphere. The public is welcome to attend the event to view the innovations. Senior Design Expo is held in the Canavan Arena, in the Schaefer Athletic Center on April 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
