50’s Kids, Cars and Adventures in Tires Optional, Published by Outskirts Press

Rick Reale serves up his memories of growing up in the 50’s and 60’s when every car had a story to go with it, real men had D.A.’s and real women were nice enough to put up with them, and music, friendships and luck defined each adventurous day.

Meriden, CT, May 05, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Rick Reale announced today the release of Tires Optional, published by Outskirts Press. In his humorous tales of remarkable automotive adventures while growing up as a teen in the 50’s and 60’s, Rick takes readers nostalgically back to a time when the country was proud, Jerry Lee Lewis was on the radio and the mile long hood of a brand new Buick Roadmaster didn’t sound like tin foil when you tapped it with your finger.

Tires Optional is an easy read that seniors, baby boomers, automobile lovers and humor seekers will all get a kick out of. Woven in with his descriptions of ’57 T-Birds, Barracudas and Buick Wildcat convertibles are Reale’s fascinating anecdotes of one entertaining automotive episode after another.

In 1963, for instance, unable to sell his ’55 Buick for the “inflated” asking price of $25.00, Rick and two of his friends instead set off across country in the mechanically questionable chariot. They had $325.00 in their pockets. Despite being slowed down by a coupleof speeding tickets, paying a $34.00 fine in a police station at 3 a.m., getting lost in St. Louis for two hours, performing one oil change and, of course, attending mass on Sunday morning, they made the first 3000 miles in a mere fifty-four hours.

In those days a “good” car cost less than a hundred bucks, drain oil was ten cents a quart and a gallon of gas was only two bits. Chuck Berry and Fats Domino filled up the air waves through the bulky am radios that were stuffed into the middle of the dash. Kids were kids, cars were cars, and when the two of them got together, there was always an event of one kind or another.

Tires Optional keeps alive the memories of those things that were important and which the contemporary “throw away society” has for the most part now thrown away: sturdy, stylish cars, friendships that were loyal, a sense of adventure and a country that was strong and respected.

Tires Optional is available on-line in paperback through Amazon and Barnes and Noble and at www.outskirtspress.com/bookstore for a maximum trade discount in quantities of ten or more.

About the author:

Rick Reale is a former educator who turned tradesman and fulfilled the spirit of art and craftsmanship through colors and decoration. His hobby of automotive interests provided him endless opportunities to study the history of mechanical transportation and experience firsthand many of these wheeled wonders. Ironically, he has spent the last fifty years with a great lady who hates car talk, but who has quietly tolerated him and his antics while working full time and raising four accomplished offspring.
