The Medal Play Open at Nicklaus Tournament Course Results

La Quinta, CA, June 12, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The Medal Play Golf Tour visited the Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA West Saturday to contest the Medal Play Open, their last major of the season. “We had a fantastic competition today,” said tour director Blane Freytag. “The course was challenging, as it should be for a major. Victory here was well earned.”

The Championship Division was a tight battle between tour veteran Ed Tennison and tour “rookie” Fred Miller. Both gentlemen carded net 72’s to set up the card playoff. Miller took the playoff on the second playoff hole by a single shot to earn his first victory on tour. Chris Kruger took third with an impressive net 74 while Jay Rein and Thomas Vail each scored net 76’s. This was Ed Tennison’s final event prior to relocating to the east coast with the military. “The tour would like to thank Mr. Tennison for his participation and dedication to the tour the past two seasons,” stated Freytag. “He always displayed good sportsmanship, even when playing poorly. His competitive fire will be missed.”

Tony Lange, coming off heart surgery just a few months ago, continued his rehabilitation by posting a tour best net 75 to hold off 3 competitors for the title. Alan Forbes, Tom Taylor and Jan Koelsch all shot net 76’s to set up a three man card playoff. Forbes used his par putt on the #1 handicap hole to claim second place winnings. “What Mr. Lange did today is nothing short of remarkable giving he had heart surgery only a few months ago!” exclaimed Freytag. “And Mr. Koelsch is due to break thru anytime now. He has finished a shot back in back to back events.”

The Silver Division saw Steve Vance break thru for his first win on tour, but it didn’t come easy. Both Vance and steady Steve Challenger posted net 70’s to set up the card playoff. Vance ended the drama on the first playoff hole. John Maldonado posted a net 75 to claim 3rd.

There were 3 players battling for 1 Qualifying spot in the World Golfers Championship Qualifier held in conjunction with the MPGT event. Chris Mangold earned a spot in the National Finals with a fine net 76. Local qualifying will continue through the summer at MPGT events.

The tour returns to action at Oak Valley in Beaumont on Sunday, June 5th.
