Sea Island is a privately owned five-mile island with glistening white sand beaches, a salt marsh nature preserve, year-round temperate weather, and home to The Cloister, an elegant Spanish and Mediterranean-style historic hotel originally designed by Addison Mizner in 1928. Most of the hotel was demolished when Sea Island decommissioned the main building in 2003. For the past three years, artisans and craftspeople – many of them commissioned by Hughes Design Associates for the hotel’s interior – have played a role in rebuilding and restoring the historic hotel.
