Mid Yorkshire Trust Improves Operation of Key Medical IT Applications

Web-based clinical software optimised by multi-site load balancing from Zeus.

Cambridge, United Kingdom, July 08, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, which provides community, acute (hospital-based treatment) and specialist health services to around half a million people, has selected Zeus Technology to help manage its key medical applications. This will ensure vital data such as medical records and patient results are always available to hospital employees across its main sites.

At any given time, 500 employees can be using one of 150 web-based systems to access medical records and patient results, via the Trust’s two datacentres. It is essential the information is constantly available and by implementing Zeus Load Balancer, the Trust can manage demands from the two datacentres quickly and efficiently.

“We need a high level of assurance to guarantee all of our important clinical applications are running efficiently and to eliminate any vulnerability in our infrastructure,” James Rawlinson, Assistant Director of IT Services at the Trust says. “By using Zeus across our virtual infrastructure, we have been able to ensure availability across both sites quickly and with the reliability we need. We can now consider rolling out additional specialised systems on the Zeus platform.”

The hospital also needs to ensure the efficient use of its servers; 80 per cent of its infrastructure is virtualized, so load balancing activity has to be real-time and dynamically managed. What’s more, by implementing a software load balancing and traffic management solution, there could be no issues with physical hardware that would require further management by the IT team in its server facilities.

“Many organisations today are using web-based applications for mission-critical operations,” comments Kosten Metreweli, Chief Strategy Officer, Zeus Technology. “Managing a virtualised infrastructure like that at The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust must be real-time and in-line with the capabilities afforded by using virtualized environments. We’re happy to be helping the Trust deliver improved patient services through efficiencies to its infrastructure.”

About The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust
Mid Yorkshire provides community, acute (hospital-based treatment) and specialist health services to around half a million people living in the Wakefield and North Kirklees areas. The Trust also treats patients who choose to use its services from surrounding areas, including South Leeds, North Yorkshire, Barnsley and Doncaster.

Since it was established in April 2002, the Trust has provided mainly hospital services. In 2010, the Trust also started providing community therapy services and intermediate care services. These services provide short-term specialist care to people who have been discharged from hospital but need extra support, care and rehabilitation before they go home or to the place where they normally live.

In April 2011, the Trust expanded to provide community health services for the Wakefield district to include Adult Community Nursing and Children’s and Families’ Health Services to become a new integrated care organisation for local people.

The Trust completed a major hospital development programme in March 2011, which involved opening new, state-of-the-art hospitals in Wakefield (Pinderfields) and Pontefract. Alongside the excellent modern hospital in Dewsbury, these fantastic new buildings are helping to transform local patient care.

The Trust has an annual income of more than £440 million and employs more than 8,500 staff. The vast majority of its income comes from our local Primary Care Trusts, NHS Wakefield District and NHS Kirklees, which are part of the Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield Cluster Partnership.
