According to the Interstitial Cystitis Association (ICA), interstitial cystitis (in-ter-stish-uhl sĭ-stī'tĭs), or IC, “is a condition that consists of recurring pelvic pain, pressure, or discomfort in the bladder and pelvic region, often associated with urinary frequency (needing to go often) and urgency (feeling a strong need to go).” Julie Beyer is an IC patient, educator and author of several books on interstitial cystitis including Customizing the Interstitial Cystitis Diet: A Confident Choices Book and Confident Choices: A Cookbook for IC and OAB. Beyer understands that IC patients can feel isolated and overwhelmed when they are first diagnosed. Active in the interstitial cystitis community for over ten years, Julie provides dietary counseling to individuals and speaks at IC support groups around the country. She volunteers as a lead moderator for the Interstitial Cystitis Network (ICN) and has contributed to publications produced by the Interstitial Cystitis Association (ICA).
