“Unlike many other areas of healthcare, our exposure to these technologies has developed so rapidly, that it’s difficult to track with conventional research tools. The rapid adoption cycles and rates of user penetration in platforms ranging from iPhones to Facebook are more similar to infectious diseases exposure than other forms of harmful addiction such as nicotine, gambling or alcohol.
“Bearing in mind that it can take up to 25 years for medical technologies and research evidence to filter down into clinical practice, we need to act smarter and quicker to get the right information and resources to affected people.”
While there is no consensus in the American Psychiatric Association and World Health Organization about the validity of Internet Addiction Disorder, the effects and symptoms of overuse of the internet are becoming increasingly evident both on and offline.
