8th Annual Backpacks for Kids
McCormick & Schmick's Restaurant DTC and McCormick’s Fish House & Bar Announce 8th Annual Backpacks For Kids Drive July 13 – August 13, Benefiting Colfax Elementary School and The DPS Educational Outreach Program. Anyone who donates a new backpack will receive a $10 dining certificate.
Denver, CO, August 06, 2011 --(PR.com)-- McCormick and Schmick’s Seafood Restaurant in the Denver Tech Center and McCormick’s Fish House & Bar at the Oxford Hotel in lower downtown are asking for help in giving local students a fresh, new start to the school year with their 8th Annual Backpack Drive to aid students in the Denver Public Schools. Backpacks collected in this year’s drive will be donated to Colfax Elementary School and the DPS Educational Outreach Program for the upcoming 2010-2011 school year.
Between July 13 and August 13, 2011, anyone who drops off a brand new, full size backpack and some school supplies at either restaurant will receive a $10 dining certificate redeemable at any McCormick & Schmick’s restaurant nationwide, including the two Denver locations (one certificate per new backpack).
“In years past, more than 600 backpacks have been collected, and we hope to exceed those numbers this year with the generous support of our local community,” said Julie Muise, general manager of McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurant at Denver Tech Center.
Colfax Elementary is located in one of the more economically challenged neighborhoods within the district with an anticipated population of 400 students. Colfax Elementary students come from diverse backgrounds and – with the leadership of Principal Joanna Martinez and her excellent staff – they constantly strive for strong academic growth and improvements. Colfax Elementary is dedicated to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all its students.
In addition to students at Colfax Elementary, backpacks collected this year will also be donated to the Educational Outreach Program (EOP), Homeless Services for Denver Public Schools. During the 2010-2011 school year, the EOP identified and assisted 1,515 students. 789 live in shelters, 544 are doubled up with others due to economic difficulties, 175 live in motels, and one is unsheltered.
“Providing students with the necessary items needed to be prepared for school is a vital part of learning and school success. The community’s generosity also helps alleviate the many worries that parents and guardians face during the back to school time. Parents and guardians who are struggling financially, and experiencing homelessness, often times must make hard choices between essential survival items and helping their child be prepared to attend school. This outreach allows children to attend the first day of school ready to learn! The McCormick’s Backpacks For Kids Drive is a great example of dedication and support of education and Denver Public Schools,” said Anna Stout, Educational Outreach Program, Homeless Services.
