Express Logic’s ThreadX® RTOS Chosen for New Atmel® AVR®32 Kit

ThreadX delivers lightning-fast interrupt response in tiny footprint.

San Jose, CA, April 04, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Express Logic, Inc., the worldwide leader in royalty-free real-time operating systems (RTOS), today announced the availability of its ThreadX RTOS for developers using Atmel’s newly announced AVR32 UC core and AT32UC3A EVK1100 Evaluation Kit. With its small memory footprint and low overhead performance, ThreadX delivers efficient support for resource-constrained systems, making it a perfect fit for the AVR32 cores. To provide its customers with this strong combination, Atmel selected the ThreadX RTOS for its latest AVR32 development kit.

ThreadX, Express Logic’s highly popular RTOS used in over 450 million electronic devices worldwide, is small in size, occupying less than 2KB in microcontroller applications. Designed from the ground up for minimal overhead and lightning fast interrupt response, ThreadX also is extremely fast, providing the throughput needed for Atmel’s AVR32’s onchip DSP capabilities. The royalty-free pricing model for ThreadX is ideal for high-volume microcontroller-based applications that use Atmel’s new AVR32 UC3 devices.

“Atmel is pleased to be working with Express Logic, and to see that their ThreadX RTOS will support our new AVR32 UC core products," noted Régis Latawiec, AVR32 Product Marketing Manager of Atmel. "Many of our customers already use ThreadX on AVR and ARM products, and we expect many new customers to find ThreadX to be a good fit for use with our AVR32 UC3 microcontrollers.”

Atmel’s AVR32 UC 32-bit RISC core is the second core to be developed based on Atmel’s AVR32 architecture, introduced last year. The AVR32 UC core delivers up to 1.3 Dhrystone MIPS/MHz, running from on-chip Flash. Atmel’s AVR32 UC core is the only 32-bit RISC core in this size range to include single-cycle DSP instructions. Atmel’s AVR32 UC3A microcontroller is the industry’s lowest power 32-bit Flash microcontrollers with DSP instructions, embedded 10/100 Ethernet MAC, full-speed (12 Mbps) USB 2.0 with on-the-go capability and a SRAM/SDRAM external bus interface. Based on Atmel’s AVR32 UC core, the UC3A Series microcontrollers deliver 80 Dhrystone MIPS and consume only 40 mA at 66 MHz when operating from a 3.3V power supply.

Latawiec added, “Time to market is extremely important to AVR32 developers since many of our target products must meet competitive pressure for short development schedules. Sharing these fundamental characteristics goes a long way in creating a great synergy between our companies.”

“Many of our customers use Atmel microprocessors and microcontrollers, and we’re proud to support the entire AVR32 family with our ThreadX RTOS,” commented William E. Lamie, president of Express Logic. “ThreadX is exactly the small, fast, royalty-free RTOS that Atmel AVR32 customers demand for their high-volume, cost-sensitive designs. We’re pleased to be a part of Atmel’s Evaluation Kits, and to continue our successful partnership with Atmel.”
