Take a "Journey of the Heart" to Help Children with Cancer

Friends of Karen announces bike tour in the Berkshires to raise money for families who have a child with a life-threatening illness. “September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and we are cycling for a cause,” says Judith Factor, Executive Director of Friends of Karen. “No family should have to face cancer alone.”

Purdys, NY, August 31, 2011 --(PR.com)-- A gentle breeze caresses your hair, the sun feels good on your back, the early fall foliage catches your eye. Ah, a weekend of cycling through charming villages and staying at the perfect country inn. But here’s the difference: each rider’s inspiration is a child. This is the 7th Annual Journey of the Heart, a three-day bike tour that covers the picturesque back roads of Litchfield and Berkshire counties, organized by Friends of Karen, a charity that provides emotional, financial and advocacy support to families who have a child with a life-threatening illness.

“September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and we are cycling for a cause,” says Judith Factor, Executive Director of Friends of Karen. “Right now we are helping to sustain 540 children and their families during the most difficult time of their lives. No family should have to face cancer alone.”

Each Journey of the Heart rider is assigned a Friends of Karen sick child, including a photo and some background information. The child’s battle with cancer or another critical illness can motivate the rider to keep going when the going gets tough.

“In her name, I looked at that hill and said, ‘This is for you, Hanna. You and all your buddies,’” recalls Vincent Liscio, who rode the Journey of the Heart for the first time last year. “I’m not sure where the strength came from, but that hill seemed like nothing.”

Last year’s Journey of the Heart raised over $180,000 for Friends of Karen’s programs. Pedaling off on September 16th from Kent, CT and finishing in Lenox, MA, this year’s event has a few seats left. Charity Navigator, an independent organization that evaluates the financial health and responsibility of thousands of U.S. charities, has given Friends of Karen its third consecutive 4-star rating – their highest award. (Only 13% of evaluated charities have received the 4-star rating three times in a row.) Friends of Karen has touched the lives of over 10,000 children in the Tri-State region.
