Benderson Family Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Facility Receives Medicare/Medicaid Certification

Kobernick Anchin receives Medicare/Medicaid certification for its skilled nursing center.

Sarasota, FL, September 14, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Facility is one of two dozen nursing homes in Florida with a five-star rating.

Staff members at Benderson Family Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Facility have been busy lately welcoming residents home.

After spending two full days under the state's microscope, the facility, which is part of the Kobernick/Anchin campus, received Medicare/Medicaid Certification and now may accept residents who rely on government funding.

Having this certification means that residents of Kobernick House and Anchin Pavilion may age in place and never have to leave home when and if they require skilled nursing care. Those who had to leave before may now return “home” and age in place. And anyone in the community who needs a skilled nursing facility is welcome to apply for admission.

Building a dream
Director of Clinical Service Cherryl Chmielewski was thrilled she had the opportunity to put her dream team together — all professionals she has worked with or known during her career. "This is the culmination of one dream and the beginning of a new one," she said.

During the certification process, inspectors went through a long series of checklists and regulations and found everything in perfect order. They interviewed staff, residents, family members, and watched personnel perform their jobs. The facility passed inspection with a perfect score.

Benderson’s administrator beamed as he spoke about the nursing home. “Benderson is one of about two dozen skilled nursing facilities in the state of Florida that has a five-star rating (the highest) from the Agency for Healthcare Administration (AHCA) in every category, including overall inspection, quality of care, quality of life, and administration,” he said. “I’m proud to be part of this.”

A dream of Executive Director Darlene Arbeit for more than 10 years, the facility opened in March 2011 and is licensed for 50 beds. But until the certification came through last week, Benderson was permitted to accept private pay residents only. Now it is open to all.

Residents’ stories
Before Benderson was completed, Kurt Seligman, now 93, had to leave his wife Lottie behind at Anchin Pavilion (the assisted living residence) where they lived together and transfer into another facility when he required skilled nursing care. “He called me over and over,” said social worker Sandy Gladstone, “to find out when he could come home.” Finally Benderson opened, and Seligman was the first person admitted to the facility.

“It was like coming to a summer resort,” Seligman said. “Everything is taken care of here. The food is great and the accommodations are like the Ritz!” Seligman is happy to be able to see his wife more often since the assisted living residence occupies the same building. “We are content once more.”

Sid Toder, another Kobernick Anchin resident who also came home to Benderson, said, “I like it very much. I liked it when I first came here and I still like it!” Toder spoke highly of the care provided by the staff. “I bless them for taking such good care of me. I’m happy.”

And Beverly Hahn, daughter of Benderson resident Margaret Love, couldn’t be happier. “In 2008 my brother brought Mom to Florida from Indiana. We looked at many places and decided that the memory care unit at Anchin was the best,” she said. Love suffers from dementia. “The staff was a great help to me and I learned how to work with her.” Love had to leave Anchin when she broke her hip, but Hahn worked with her mom in rehab regularly and got her to walk again (at 92) so Love could return. “In 2010 Mom required skilled nursing care and could not remain at Anchin. There were many tears shed as we moved her to another facility.” Hahn was overjoyed when she learned that Benderson received its Medicare/Medicaid certification. “This feels like home to me. Quality people, quality care in a quiet atmosphere — I pray she never has to leave her home again.”
