Jon Vickers Famed Opera Tenor Celebrates 85th Birthday

New York, NY, September 17, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Kultur celebrates Jon Vickers on his 85th birthday on October 26th by announcing the availability of two of his Opera performances Tristan und Isolde D2230 and Peter Grimes D2255 on DVD.

Jon Vickers was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan Canada, October 26, 1926. In 1950, he was awarded a scholarship to study opera at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Seven years later, Vickers joined London’s Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. In 1960 he left for New York to join the Metropolitan Opera. He became world famous for a wide range of German, French and Italian roles.

An example of his large expressive voice well suited for demanding Wagnerian roles is of his portrayal of Tristan in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde. Michael Richter of Opera Japonica "...shining clearly on the eponymous stars: Vickers and Nilsson." In his portrayal of Peter Grimes in Benjamin Britten’s opera by the same name "Of Jon Vickers," The Times said, "...immensely potent, marvelously impersonated...a great tragic study."
