Weston, FL, September 25, 2011 --(PR.com
)-- In conjunction with National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, Sylvan Learning of Weston is pleased to further its commitment for the second year to the Hispanic Community with their 2nd annual “FIESTA” event by participating as a presenting sponsor of this cultural festival to celebrate the achievements, influence and contributions of the Hispanic community.
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating the histories and cultures from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America; as well as the contributions of the Latino Americans have made in the culture and society of our communities.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.
Elena Dolinski de Montilla, founder of “FIESTA” and Executive Director of Sylvan Learning Center of Weston said, “I feel so proud of my heritage and grateful to have the YMCA of Broward County hosting the “FIESTA” at the Sheinberg Family YMCA of Weston. Proceeds from the “FIESTA” event will provide financial aid for those people in our community who need YMCA services but are unable to pay for them.”
Everyone is invited to join “FIESTA” on Sunday, October 30th from 11am-4pm at the Sheinberg Family YMCA located at the Weston Regional Park.
This Free, fun, family-friendly event includes performances of folkloric dance from many Latin American countries, as well as Spain. Through their performances and music, the dancers will entertain and educate the audience with the ceremonies, rituals and stories of their rich cultures. Arts and crafts will also be on display. Delicious ethnic Latin American dishes will be available from local vendors.
