Stanbridge College students, faculty and staff raised over $1250 to support Doctors Without Borders/ Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) disaster relief for victims of the current famine, drought and political turmoil in Somalia.

Irvine, CA, October 01, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Stanbridge College is pleased to announce that its students, staff and faculty have raised over $1250 for Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) disaster response efforts for the children and people of Somalia who are currently the victims of famine, drought and lawlessness.

“It is critical that we encourage our students to be involved in global issues, especially ones that deal with human suffering and malnutrition,” stated Stanbridge College President, Yasith Weerasuryia. “The situation in Kenya is in dire need of help. As the recipients of the Nobel Peace Price in 1999, MSF is a truly worthy organization to support in this time of need.”

Every quarter, Stanbridge College chooses a charity to help local and global communities in need. This quarter, Stanbridge College chose to raise funds for disaster relief provided by MSF for over 400,000 Somalian refugees in camps in Kenya.

According to a recent article in CNN Health news, the world’s largest refugee camp in Dadaab, Kenya, built to hold 90,000 people, is overflowing with more than 400,000 Somalian refugees. Diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough are infecting children and adults who are already suffering from hunger and malnutrition. MSF has been working in Somalia since 1991 providing free medical care including primary healthcare, surgery, and treatment for malnutrition. They are also supporting displaced people through distribution of relief items.

Stanbridge College’s commitment to long-term community partnerships, creating a positive impact on local and global communities, and incorporating Civic Engagement and Service Learning into the curriculum is exemplified in its REACH – Beyond the Classroom initiative. The REACH initiative provides students with opportunities to give back to the community while earning credit towards coursework in a structured environment.
