Ellicott City Interior Decorator Designs Room for National Sweepstakes Winner

Baltimore, MD, October 13, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The winner of the national sweepstakes “The great Fall Fix-up” was Baltimore resident Douglas Chay of Catonsville. Invista, the company that makes the fibers for Stainmaster Carpet and the sponsor of the sweepstakes, chose Ellicott City based The Welcome Home: Interior Design Solutions, to design the room for the lucky winner.

“We have been impressed with the quality of the design work, the commitment to customer satisfaction and the overall professionalism shown by Jill and The Welcome Home,” said Susan Bruno at Invista. With a budget of $15,000, The Welcome Home’s founder and principle designer, Jill Valeri, was asked to create a design plan for the room that would feature Stainmaster carpet. “Douglas had this very dated mauve carpet. He also had a hodge-podge of furniture that wasn’t working for him,” said Jill. “He asked for a space that was restful, warm and inviting. He loves music and movies and we wanted to create a space that would contain his vast music collection and to become the entertainment focus of his home.”

In order to meet Douglas’ desire for a relaxing and cozy room, the focus was on a warm palette that was largely monochromatic. The color scheme selected was a warm camel with touches of sage green and burgundy. A large part of the budget was dedicated to the new audio/video system as well as the custom cabinet that was designed and created by Baltimore area resident Mark Pawlak. The sitting area now features a comfortable but tailored sofa and a pair of armless side chairs in a fun pattern. Ms. Valeri said, “the pattern on the chairs really helps give the room some life. It pulls together the color palette and adds visual interest.”

The artwork was a key ingredient in the space. A piece was chosen for over the fireplace for its reference to music; the colors also compliment the camel on the walls and floor, the red of the brick and the colors of the soft furnishings.

Prior to the re-design, the room was also very dark. Track lighting was added in the hallway, a contemporary semi-flush pendant highlights the main sitting area and the custom cabinet has its own pair of mounted sconces. There are also table lamps and a floor lamp. According to Jill, “creating a lighting plan that has light sources at different levels is the ideal way to light a space.”

The most important outcome of the project is the client’s satisfaction. After seeing the completed results, Mr. Chay stated, "Now I have a beautiful room that I can share with others. The only drawback to having the room look so good is that it makes the rest of my house look shabby in comparison!"
