Jacques P. Barber, Ph.D. to Speak on Integrating Psychotherapy Research with Clinical Practice: A Personal Journey

Dr. Jacques P. Barber will deliver "Integrating Psychotherapy Research with Clinical Practice: A Personal Journeyā€¯ on Wednesday, October 26 at 7:00 p.m. He will discuss different methodologies and ways in which the Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies can combine research and practice to become an international leader in psychodynamics.

Garden City, NY, October 19, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Adelphi University is proud to present Jacques P. Barber., Ph.D., who will deliver “Integrating Psychotherapy Research and Clinical Practice: A Personal Journey” on Wednesday, October 26, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. in the Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom in the Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. Dr. Barber will present his work in evaluating the efficacy of dynamic therapy and discuss how different methodologies are used to examine the question of efficacy, pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of these methodologies. He will suggest how to better integrate practice and research in order to more comprehensively answer the question: Is dynamic (or any) psychotherapy effective? He will also highlight ways in which the Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies can become a leader in the practice, training, and research of psychodynamics. This lecture is sponsored by the Lindemann Lecture for Human Development and is part of the Adelphi University 2011 Cultural Events Series. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Barber is the new dean of Adelphi’s Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies. Prior to joining Adelphi, he served as professor of psychology in the department of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and a member of the Penn Graduate Psychology Group. He is also an adjunct professor at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden and at the Queensland Institute of Technology in Brisbane, Australia. Additionally, he worked at the Veteran Administration (VA), on a part-time basis, where he conducted research on PTSD. Dr. Barber is a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology and a fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society. He is also a former president of the international, multidisciplinary scientific Society for Psychotherapy Research.

Dr. Barber has published more than 180 papers, chapters, and books in psychotherapy and personality. His work has appeared in various notable journals such as the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Psychotherapy Research, and the American Journal of Psychiatry, among others. In addition, he has published several books on psychology and psychotherapy, including Echoes of the Trauma: Relationship Themes and Emotions in the Narratives of the Children of Holocaust Survivors; Dynamic Psychotherapy: A Guide to Evidence-Based Practice; and The Therapeutic Alliance: An Evidence-Based Guide to Practice.
