SMH-Kobernick Anchin Open Specialty Clinic to Help People Safely Manage Blood Thinner Medications

This week, Sarasota Memorial Health Care System opens an important outpatient specialty clinic on the Kobernick Anchin retirement community’s campus to help residents there and others in the community safely manage their anticoagulation medication.

Sarasota, FL, November 02, 2011 --(PR.com)-- This week, Sarasota Memorial Health Care System will open an important outpatient specialty clinic on the Kobernick Anchin retirement community’s campus to help residents there and others in the community safely manage their anticoagulation medications.

Doctors typically prescribe anticoagulation medication, including Coumadin, Jantoven, warfarin and low molecular weight heparin, to reduce the risk of dangerous blood clots in people who have had heart attacks, strokes or other blood clotting conditions. But it can be a delicate balancing act: taking too much increases bleeding, while taking too little increases the risk of potentially deadly blood clots.

Directed by a board-certified cardiologist, and staffed by a nurse practitioner and specially trained nurses, the anticoagulation clinic team works with patients and their physicians to monitor and adjust their medication dosage. The clinic staff also provides education and support to help manage changes in diet, medicines and other factors that can interact with the medication. Studies show that patients managed by Anticoagulation Clinics experience fewer adverse events, including bleeding and blood clots, as well as fewer hospital visits resulting from these complications.

It is the first clinic Sarasota Memorial has opened in a retirement community, but it will be the fifth anticoagulation clinic the hospital has opened in Sarasota and Manatee counties in recent years. The others are located in the health system’s neighborhood care centers located at:

1. Sarasota Memorial Heart & Vascular Services, 1540 S. Tamiami Trail: (941) 917-8889
2. Sarasota Memorial Institute for Advanced Medicine, 5880 Rand Blvd. (off Clark Road near I-75): (941) 917-8230
3. Sarasota Memorial Health Care Center at Blackburn Point, 929 S. Tamiami Trail, Osprey: (941) 917-3418
4. Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Center at Heritage Harbour, 1040 River Heritage Blvd., Bradenton: (941) 917-8128

The new clinic will operate on Thursday mornings at: Kobernick Anchin Pavilion, 1951 N. Honore Ave., Sarasota: (941) 917-8889

The clinic’s comprehensive one-on-one approach includes:

- Regular assessment of INR values, medication and lifestyle changes and evaluation of patient needs
- Lab testing (simple finger-stick technology)
- Immediate results so dosage can be adjusted if needed
- Advanced medical assessments and interventions as warranted
- Ongoing education and support to help patients and their families manage changes in diet, medications and other factors or medical conditions that can affect anticoagulation therapy.

Patients at any level of anticoagulation therapy are welcome, but they must have a referral and visit their managing physician at least once a year. Appointments are required. Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance cover some or all of the provided services.
