College Opens Doors Throughout Great Britain

The 2011 Destination figures for Walford and North Shropshire College show a huge increase in the number of learners progressing to higher education.

Shropshire, United Kingdom, November 09, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Lucy Beaumont, Assistant Director of Learner Services, comments “There has been a year on year increase for some time but this year we have seen a jump of 11% with over 200 learners applying through UCAS. While 86% of students on academic courses have progressed to higher education it is especially pleasing to see the large number of vocational (Non-A level) students following this route; three quarters of health students and over half of the sports students are going into higher education also.”

The most popular university choice for 2011 entry was Glyndwr followed by Staffordshire and Chester. Other popular choices were Aberystwyth University, Liverpool John Moores and Bangor.

While many students have chosen to stay local others have chosen to study in locations as far afield as Cornwall and Edinburgh; meaning Walford and North Shropshire College is maintaining a successful past-student presence throughout almost the entire country!

There is a huge range of topics that can be studied at higher education but the area chosen by most students this year has been nursing and related subjects (15%). The next most popular topic has been Education with 4% opting for this area. These are followed closely by, the somewhat surprising, Event Management at 3%. As well as these popular subjects there have also been some very interesting individual choices made by students for their further studies:

Petroleum Engineering at Manchester – Dennis Chan
Forensic Anthropology at Liverpool John Moores – Tamsin Childs
Agri-Business Management at Newcastle – Edward Giles
Speech and Language Therapy at Manchester – Jade Hassall
International Relations and French at Aston – Michaela Kynaston
Motorsports Engineering and Design at Swansea – Jack Morris and Ross Purfit
Marine and Freshwater Biology at Aberystwyth – Rebecca Pawluk
Geoscience at Keele – Sean Whitley
History and History of Ideas at Goldsmiths, London

They are also extremely pleased to report that after a GAP year, during which she spent her time working on an archaeological dig at an Etruscan site in Italy, Sophie Ridley has taken up a place at Oxford University where she will be studying Archaeology and Anthropology.

Of her time at the Oswestry campus, where she studied Geography, History Philosophy and Chemistry, Sophie says “I found it really enjoyable.” And “The staff were very helpful and supportive.”
