The News & Observer Donates to the Tarheel Golf Foundation: Kids Benefit

Raleigh, NC, November 18, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The News & Observer, based out of Raleigh, NC, presented a generous contribution to the Tarheel Golf Foundation, Inc. An offer from The News & Observer that started out as a great deal for local golfers turned into a helping hand for junior golfers.

Julie Parker, N&O ZONE Rewards Coordinator, said that in November 2010, the N&O introduced a Golf Card that sold for $69 and presented cardholders with the opportunity to purchase one round of golf and receive one round free at twelve of the Triangle's premier courses. Participating courses included: Chapel Ridge, Crooked Creek, Falls Village, Keith Hills, Lochmere, Lonnie Poole at NC State University, Mill Creek, The Neuse, Pine Hollow, The Preserve, Reedy Creek, and UNC Finley. Parker stated that all marketing materials for the card and on the back of each individual card, the News & Observer advertised that a percentage of the sales of the cards would be donated to the Tarheel Golf Foundation.

According to Eric Murray, Executive Director of the Tarheel Golf Foundation, “The generous donation will be used to support junior golfers in North Carolina. The funds will be used exclusively for kids that need financial assistance toward entry fees and travel expenses for competitive junior golf tournaments. North Carolina is loaded with junior golf talent, but not all players have the financial means to play on a consistent basis. The tight economy has made it even more difficult for many kids to compete in the kind of junior golf tournaments that would provide access to college coaches. The Tarheel Golf Foundation and the Tarheel Junior Golf Tour have a substantial number of former players that are now playing golf for top collegiate programs.” Murray went on to say: “College coaches often show up at Tarheel Junior Golf tournaments. The coaches know that if a junior player can compete at a high level in North Carolina, he or she can also compete at the college level and beyond. According to the National Junior Golf Scoreboard, North Carolina has moved into the third spot behind California and Florida for the overall strength of field for boys at the high school level.”

About the Tarheel Golf Foundation:

The Tarheel Golf Foundation, Inc is a NC non-profit corporation that operates two Junior Golf Tours in North Carolina: The Tarheel Junior Golf Tour and the Future Stars Tour. The Tarheel Junior Golf Tour hosts nationally ranked junior golf tournaments throughout North Carolina. The Tarheel Junior Golf Tour attracts elite players, both boys and girls, from about twenty states, and five different countries. The Tarheel Golf Foundation will host the 2012 REX Hospital Junior Invitational for the third straight year. Over the past two years, the Tarheel Golf Foundation has donated $18,000 to the REX Healthcare Foundation. The 2011 Rex Hospital Junior Invitational was ranked in the top ten percent, for strength of field, for all junior golf tournaments in the United States.

The Future Stars Tour was formed to give boys and girls the opportunity to play competitive junior golf but in a more relaxed environment. The Future Stars Tour allows the players to use caddies, and the tournaments are one-day events. The Future Stars tournaments are also beginning to draw some of our elite players who simply need to hone their skills for an upcoming larger tournament.

The Tarheel Golf Foundation supports the First Tee of the Triangle program and the Tarheel Youth Golf Association, both of which will benefit from the News & Observer donation. Murray said: “The Tarheel Golf Foundation greatly appreciates the wonderful gift received from the N&O. The N&O contribution is the largest one-time donation presented to the Tarheel Golf Foundation.” To qualify for financial assistance, go to www.tarheelgolf.org and click on the “Players Scholarship” link.
