Hybrid Publishing Start Up Fights Illiteracy with One for One Book Donation Program

PUBSLUSH hosts red carpet benefit at the Bowery Hotel in New York City to announce launch and raise money for literacy initiatives at partner orphanage in Kenya.

New York, NY, November 18, 2011 --(PR.com)-- PUBSLUSH Press (http://www.pubslush.com) has launched in true New York fashion with a blow out red carpet gala at the Bowery Hotel in downtown Manhattan. The event, titled Journey Through Africa, raised funds for PUBSLUSH’s inaugural giving partner, Flying Kites, a nonprofit dedicated to orphan care in Kenya, and announced the inception of the new publisher that lets readers decide what books get published and for every book sold, donates a book to a child in need.

Attended by some 300 guests, the benefit offered an incredible silent auction (featuring a grand prize safari in the Masia Mara, Kenya), live entertainment (including an African band, African body painters, and the renowned 60 second novelist), food, raffles, dancing, and more.

The proceeds raised will facilitate the staffing of a full time International Baccalaureate teacher at the Flying Kites Leadership Academy in Njabini, Kenya. Additionally, the first book published through PUBSLUSH will benefit the organization’s new library, providing books, computers, furniture, etc. The mission statement of PUBSLUSH is to impact education initiatives by providing books, relevant resources, and logistical support to children worldwide.

Hellen Barbara, president of PUBSLUSH, and Jesse Potash, founder, visited Flying Kites in March and were instantly impressed by the high standards of excellence upheld at the orphan care center. Hellen revealed, “For us, partnering with Flying Kites was a no brainer because our missions are so clearly aligned. We fell in love with the children and the people behind the organization and could not have found a better match for our first partner.”

“We are so thrilled to be able to work with such like minded and motivated people,” added Potash. PUBSLUSH also plans to roll out a pilot Kindle program at the school, as a focus on digital reading technology in the developing world is paramount to the company’s vision.

Guests reveled in a full open bar sponsored by Bulldog Gin, Starr African Rum, Tanteo Tequila, Maker’s Mark, Zing Vodka, and Omni Wines. Photography was provided by Erica Simone and event planning and ticketing services were provided by Event Farm.

About PUBSLUSH Press
PUBSLUSH Press (http://www.pubslush.com) is a full service, social publisher for aspiring authors. Readers decide what books get published, and for every book sold, a book is donated to a child in need. The process is simple: writers submit the best ten pages and a summary of their manuscript. Users read, share, and support (aka preorder) their favorite submissions. They’re only charged if a book is selected for publication. Once a book reaches 2,000 supporters, we publish it (ensuring only the best books get published), providing all the services and support of a legacy publisher. PUBSLUSH is entirely about giving: giving a voice to aspiring authors, giving the power to decide what books get published to readers, and giving books to children without access to literature.
