Farmers & Merchants Bank Teaches At-Risk Youth the Ins and Outs of Banking with Fun and Educational Tour

Children also receive an inside look at Long Beach Police Department and Courthouse.

Long Beach, CA, November 24, 2011 --(PR.com)-- A group of at-risk youth from the Orangewood Children and Family Center engaged in a fun and educational tour of Farmers & Merchants Bank (F&M) and the Long Beach Police Department on November 17, 2011.

The tour of the Bank, guided by F&M Vice President Christine Walker, enabled the children to learn the inner workings of a bank, picking up some fun and educational financial tips along the way. The day included a tour of the Bank’s main branch at 302 Pine Ave. with visits to the executive offices and vault and a tour of Farmers and Merchants Trust Company.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to educate underprivileged children who are not exposed to important financial guidance that their parents or education system would provide,” said Walker. “Our goal is to instill wise financial habits, advocate for fiscal responsibility and offer our expertise to help these children in their journey to achieving independence.”

Orangewood is an Orange County-based center that shelters abused youth and offers programs to support the ongoing needs of children in the foster care system. The organization offers programs that include emergency assistance, job placement, transitional housing, peer counseling, scholarships and vocational training. Orangewood also has an on-campus school.

F&M’s partnership with Orangewood is part of the Bank’s ongoing community initiative to provide opportunities for at-risk youth.

Walker also expressed her gratitude to Lieutenant Randy Allen of the Long Beach Police Department, who led an extensive tour of the Long Beach Courthouse, where the children witnessed an actual trial in progress. The tour also visited the Police Department’s K-9 unit, motorcycle unit and SWAT team.

"The children received an eye-opening look into the inner workings of the Long Beach Police Department and everyone appreciated the wonderful experience that was shared," said Walker.
