LAGI Partnership with NYC Department of Parks & Recreation Announces Opening of Design Competition

Land Art Generator Initiative announces $20,000 in prize money for the competition open until July 1, 2012. The open call asks for large-scale artwork proposals for Freshkills Park that generate utility-scale renewable electricity for New York City.

New York, NY, January 03, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The 2012 Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) international design competition opened today. The design site is within Freshkills Park (the former Fresh Kills Landfill) in Staten Island and the competition is being held in partnership with New York City's Department of Parks & Recreation along with other local institutions.

LAGINYC 2012 is an ideas competition to design a site-specific public artwork for Freshkills Park that, in addition to its conceptual beauty, has the ability to harness energy cleanly from nature and convert it to electricity for the utility grid.

The expansiveness of the design site at Freshkills Park presents the opportunity to power the equivalent of hundreds or even thousands of homes with a large work of public infrastructure art. Artist teams have 100 acres within which to design.

The stunning beauty of the reclaimed landscape and the dramatic backdrop of the Manhattan skyline provides an opportune setting from which to be inspired, and it offers the perfect environment for a showcase example of the immense potential of aesthetically interesting renewable energy installations for sustainable urban planning.

The detailed design brief was released on January 1, 2012 and is available at http://landartgenerator.org/designcomp. Submissions will be received until July 1, 2012.

The monetary prize award to the winners of the 2012 LAGI design competition will not guarantee a commission for construction; however, LAGI will work with stakeholders both locally (NYC) and internationally to pursue possibilities for implementation of the most pragmatic and aesthetic designs that come from the biennial LAGI competitions.

The first place winner in 2012 will receive $15,000; the runner-up will receive $4,000.

For the 2012 design competition, the Land Art Generator Initiative has also released a modified design brief document specifically for high school students everywhere (those age 19 and under). There will be a $1,000 prize award dedicated to this high school student category.

In the summer of 2012, the Land Art Generator Initiative will be holding an open event in Staten Island to engage the public with selected design ideas and to stimulate discussion on topics of ecology, energy, public art, and sustainable urban development. The event will include workshops and panel discussions.

The jury for 2012 includes: Bjarke Ingels (BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group), Dr. Henry Kelly (U.S. Department of Energy), James Corner (james corner field operations), Jean Gardner (Associate Professor of Social Ecological History, Parsons New School, School of Constructed Environments), Alice Aycock (Public Design Commission of the City of New York), Eric Shiner (Director, The Andy Warhol Museum), Patricia Watts & Amy Lipton (ecoartspace), Melanie Cohn (Executive Director, Council on the Arts & Humanities for Staten Island), Steven Grillo (Staten Island Economic Development Corporation), Peter Yeadon (Partner, Decker Yeadon), Anne Guiney (Executive Director, Institute for Urban Design), Eloise Hirsh (Freshkills Park Administrator, New York City Department of Parks & Recreation), and Phil Gleason (Assistant Commissioner for Waste Management Engineering, NYC Department of Sanitation).
