EmployIndy Awards More Than 100 Local Nursing Students Scholarship to Complete Degrees

Indianapolis, IN, January 11, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Ivy Tech Community Community College nursing students will have one less stressor this semester. EmployIndy enrolled 90 students working toward their Associate of Science in nursing (ASN) at Ivy Tech Community College into training through the Health Care Careers Initiative. Students enrolled in training will receive up to $3,000 dollars to cover the cost of education, books, and supplies.

"This is such a blessing to have the financial burden lifted as I finish out my first degree in the career path I love,” said Madeline Breier, an ASN student at Ivy Tech Community College. “It gives me peace of mind to know that a job and licensure are even more attainable. I could not be more grateful!" Breier will complete her ASN in July.

The Health Care Careers Initiative is funded by a $4.8 million grant from the Department of Labor. The initiative provides training dollars to participants interested in careers in health care, one of the fastest growing career sectors in Indianapolis.

“The need for skilled health care professionals has increased dramatically in Indianapolis, and the Health Care Careers Initiative is allowing us to build a pipeline of quality candidates for health care employers across the city,” said Brooke Huntington, President and CEO of EmployIndy. “These ASN students have worked hard to make it through their first three semesters of the nursing program. This funding will allow them to focus even more during their final semester and attain the careers in health care that they have been working toward.”

The Health Care Careers Initiative also met with ASN students at the University of Indianapolis to make a similar award. More than 25 students were eligible to participate in the Health Care Careers Initiative and will have tuition for their final semester paid.

EmployIndy, along with WorkOne Indianapolis, partner with local health care employers, including IU Health, St. Vincent, Wishard and Community hospitals, and local providers of higher education to help participants get the most out of their experience. In addition, EmployIndy strives to maximize the benefits of the training dollars by working with individuals to determine the best career and training path based on their interests, experiences, and goals. Participants have opportunity to develop their career in health care through college education or industry training and job placement.

“Each of these students will benefit from the financial assistance, but the real value is in the job placement assistance provided by WorkOne through the grant,” said Angie Koller, Dean of the School of Nursing at Ivy Tech Community College. “Nursing school is stressful on its own. This grant can help reduce some of the stresses after graduation by connecting our students with employers who are looking for qualified candidates.”
