The True Value of Education: Touched by a Child Published by Outskirts Press

George Towery’s collection of funny, sad and inspirational stories from his four decades as a principal showcases those heroic human talents that administrators and teacher have, but which often do not come under traditional definitions of education.

Springfield, VA, January 31, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Award winning educator George Towery announced today the release of Touched by a Child, A Principal’s Story, published by Outskirts Press. Towery’s memoir of his forty years of experience in two modest income Title 1 schools in Washington, D.C. will help any aspiring school administrator understand fully not only what challenges our schools face in their quest for excellence, but also -- and perhaps more importantly -- the challenges students face in our nation’s communities with limited resources.

Towery’s tales of individual students bring alive for readers the struggles so many children face when school is much more than a place of learning for them. For these boys and girls, from every background, circumstance and nationality, school can be two hot meals a day, their breakfast and lunch, served by kind, caring adults in a sanctuary safe from the drugs, violence and away from the often lonely neighborhoods many go home to every night.

In this time, Towery recognizes, education is about children first, not tests, and effective learning requires a positive and caring relationship between teachers, administrators and students. Regardless of the criticism currently being leveled at schools, the positive impact that teachers and principals can have on children is beyond measure.

Towery’s first school was a burned out, antiquated building nestled between a prison and an Interstate, his second a “really difficult school,” as he was told before taking it over as its chief administrator. Towery’s forty years as principal at these two challenging institutions gave him the experience to learn the true value of education: “giving all students the opportunity to learn, to grow and to master those skills required for a productive and full life.”

The accolades Towery has earned as Principal of the Year, Educator of the Year and principal of the school Redbook Magazine selected as one of the hundred best in the country, all attest to the value that Towery gave to his schools and that he now gives to the readers of this exemplary new book.

About the author:

George Towery’s award winning educational career spanned forty-five years, forty of them as a principal. Among his honors was his selection as the very first elementary principal to be named Principal of the Year (1988-89). In addition, Towery was Phi Delta Kappa’s Educator of the Year, Fairfax County Lee District’s Les Dorson Citizen of the Year, and was named Educator of the Year by the Mount Vernon Chapter of the DAR. The lawyers of Fairfax County’s Bar Association also honored him for his service to children. Towery is justifiably proud that his school, Cameron Elementary, was picked by Redbook Magazine as one of “America’s 100 Best Elementary Schools” (1995). Now retired, Towery lives in Northern Virginia and is a popular speaker at groups of educators and parents.
