South Nassau Communities Hospital Establishes Medical Education Affiliation Agreement

Under the agreement, Hofstra North Shore-LIJ medical students will be offered clinical assignments and training opportunities with South Nassau’s community and hospital-based physicians encompassing ambulatory, in-patient and emergency services.

Oceanside, NY, February 09, 2012 --(PR.com)-- South Nassau Communities Hospital and Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine have signed an academic affiliation agreement, which is effective immediately and combines the School of Medicine’s academic and clinical resources with South Nassau’s clinical programs and physicians to provide world class medical training opportunities and facilitate collaboration on leading-edge medical education initiatives.

"This affiliation benefits each institution as well as the communities and patients served by South Nassau," said Linda Efferen, MD, South Nassau’s chief medical officer. “In addition to training new physicians and providing continuing medical education opportunities for medical staff, it will enhance patient care by fostering research and quality initiatives designed to enhance patient care and improve clinical programs.”

Under the agreement, Hofstra North Shore-LIJ medical students will be offered clinical assignments and training opportunities with South Nassau’s community and hospital-based physicians encompassing ambulatory, in-patient and emergency services.

The affiliation with the new School of Medicine complements South Nassau’s extensive roster of medical education affiliations. The hospital sponsors a three-year, post-graduate Family Practice Residency Program that is affiliated with SUNY Stony Brook Health Science Center and New York College of Osteopathic Medicine as well as a Podiatry Residency Program. It also has an integrated residency program in surgery with Nassau University Medical Center and St. John’s Hospital as well as residency rotations in pediatrics for residents from Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center; in obstetrics and gynecology with Nassau University Medical Center and St. John’s Hospital and in physical medicine and rehabilitation with Nassau University Medical Center. In addition to the new South Nassau agreement with the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, South Nassau also offers undergraduate clinical experiences for medical students from SUNY at Stony Brook, SUNY at Brooklyn, New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Ross University Medical School.
