Wello to Deploy Full Scale Sustainable Energy Converter in Orkney

Finnish renewable technology developer, Wello Ltd, has announced its Penguin wave energy converter is ready for full-scale deployment at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, following successful testing.

Espoo, Finland, March 02, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Finnish renewable technology developer, Wello Ltd, has today announced its Penguin wave energy converter is ready for full-scale deployment at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, following successful testing.

Wello's 0.5 MW Penguin device, which produces sustainable power through wave energy conversion, has been granted permission for full-scale deployment by Marine Scotland after the technology was verified by leading certification body Det Norske Veritas (DNV).

Extensive trials have been completed to ensure the device, developed during 2010-2011 and due to be deployed at EMEC’s wave test site at Billia Croo by the end of March, is sea-ready and ongoing environmental studies will monitor any potential impact during the full test phase.

Aki Luukkainen, CEO of Wello Ltd, says: “We are excited to confirm our readiness to move to full-scale operations after achieving success in model testing, and are extremely pleased by the short timescale within which we have been able to move forward to full-scale deployment.

“Successful testing of this device at EMEC would mean the full scale Penguin generator is capable of deployment in larger wave energy parks worldwide. The team at EMEC has offered us tremendous support, which has helped us to reach this stage within such a short space of time.”

Stuart Baird, operations director of EMEC, said: "We are delighted that Wello has reached this stage in their testing programme. This is a major milestone for them, and we look forward to seeing the Penguin installed at our wave test site at Billia Croo."

About Wello
Wello is a developer of wave energy converters. Founders of Wello have been responsible for dozens of wave energy concepts with thousands of hours spent at sea. The Penguin model was selected for further development in 2008 when Wello Ltd. was founded. Since then a number of scale models have been built and tested successfully in laboratory and at sea. Deployment at a 1 MW wave energy park is planned for 2013, and a 10 MW wave energy park by 2016. The Wello Penguin has a nominal power generation capacity of 0.5MW, with an upgrade path towards 10MW. A fully sealed floating generator platform, with all moving parts inside the platform, Penguin delivers harvested energy as electricity to the national grid.

About EMEC

The European Marine Energy Centre (established in 2003) provides internationally recognised and independently accredited purpose-built, open sea test facilities for wave and tidal energy converters in the world class wave and tidal conditions of Orkney, Scotland. The Centre was established with around £30 million of funding from the Scottish Government, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, the Carbon Trust, the UK Government, Scottish Enterprise, the European Union and Orkney Islands Council. www.emec.org.uk.
