)-- Finnish renewable technology developer, Wello Ltd, has today announced its Penguin wave energy converter is ready for full-scale deployment at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, following successful testing.
Wello's 0.5 MW Penguin device, which produces sustainable power through wave energy conversion, has been granted permission for full-scale deployment by Marine Scotland after the technology was verified by leading certification body Det Norske Veritas (DNV).
Extensive trials have been completed to ensure the device, developed during 2010-2011 and due to be deployed at EMEC’s wave test site at Billia Croo by the end of March, is sea-ready and ongoing environmental studies will monitor any potential impact during the full test phase.

Wello is a developer of wave energy converters. Founders of Wello have been responsible for dozens of wave energy concepts with thousands of hours spent at sea. The Penguin model was selected for further development in 2008 when Wello Ltd. was founded. Since then a number of scale models have been built and tested successfully in laboratory and at sea. Deployment at a 1 MW wave energy park is planned for 2013, and a 10 MW wave energy park by 2016. The Wello Penguin has a nominal power generation capacity of 0.5MW, with an upgrade path towards 10MW. A fully sealed floating generator platform, with all moving parts inside the platform, Penguin delivers harvested energy as electricity to the national grid.
The European Marine Energy Centre (established in 2003) provides internationally recognised and independently accredited purpose-built, open sea test facilities for wave and tidal energy converters in the world class wave and tidal conditions of Orkney, Scotland.
