BODY PRESENCE: Material and Response by Flynn Grinnan at Yellow Peril Gallery

Sculptures in BODY PRESENCE Aim to Offer an Embodiment of Reflection: on Art, on Process, and on Being Human

Providence, RI, March 03, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Yellow Peril Gallery is pleased to present BODY PRESENCE, a sculptural series by Flynn Grinnan on display from 19 April to 13 May 2012. Opening reception will be on Thursday, 19 April from 5PM-9PM. The exhibition also includes a multimedia demonstration of Grinnan’s process in the adjacent studio.

At a time when it seems every aspect of life is immersed in a web of emerging technologies, BODY PRESENCE aims to offer an embodied moment of reflection: on art, on process, and on being human.

“My sculptures attempt to evoke sensations that progress will theoretically leave behind,” explains Grinnan. “I want viewers to be left with an intangible and inexplicable feeling after experiencing my work and the process behind it.”

A specific play between the material and the human body plays a vital role in Grinnan's work. In this exhibition, his sculptures are an evolution of the ceramic tradition; he employs classical methods to prepare the slabs of clay before each piece is draped and then removed from the body.

“The finishes are chosen and applied in reaction to what has happened before,” Grinnan states, in an effort to showcase the action of the drape, “the moment that defines the character of the final object.”

He adds: “The unique qualities found in each piece are defined by interactions with the body and the various stages of production.”

BODY PRESENCE promises to be more than the traditional sculpture show. Enriching the display and arrangement of the sculpture in the exhibition space, a multimedia demonstration of Grinnan's process will play in Yellow Peril Gallery's adjacent studio. Through a series of videos and photos, the audience will be given an exclusive view into the artist's methods and practices that are so essential to the viewing and interpretation of each body draping.

BODY PRESENCE will also be on display during regular gallery hours: Thursday and Friday, 3PM – 8PM, Saturday and Sunday, 12PM-5PM, and by appointment or chance.

About Flynn Grinnan
Flynn Grinnan is an experiential artist originally from Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, trained in traditional pottery methods and techniques to create functional objects. His current artwork addresses the interaction between clay and the human body. While the methods used in making this work connects back to the traditional pottery process, it is the act of draping over human form that is showcased. Flynn’s goal is to present evidence of the human body to the viewer, whether it is through a thrown vessel form, a fired slab of clay that was draped over a body, or a photograph depicting similar acts. Through the indication of a body's presence, the relationship between the viewer and the object becomes an isolated experience rather than an everyday sort of interaction that one might have with a cup or bowl. A graduate of Hampshire College, with a focus in studio arts, Flynn now lives and creates in Providence, Rhode Island. For more info about Flynn Grinnan, visit flynngrinnan.com.
