International Cast of Brilliant Young Soloists Come to Hitchin

Benslow Baroque Opera Presents Handel’s Semele. A New Partnership with North Hertfordshire College

Hitchin, United Kingdom, March 09, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Benslow Music is proud to present two fully-staged performances of Handel’s opera Semele at the Main Theatre, North Hertfordshire College, Hitchin on 14 April. The first performance is at 2 pm, and the evening performance begins at 7 pm.

The production is the result of an intensive five days of rehearsal by members of Benslow Music’s unique biennial Baroque Opera course, which comprises an orchestra of non-professional players of period instruments, a small amateur chorus, and an international team of hand-picked solo singers, many of whom are at the beginning of highly promising professional careers. The cast is headed by French soprano Faustine De Mones as Semele while Japanese tenor Hiromitsu Maeda stars as Jupiter. Tutors and musicians stay together at Benslow Music for the week, eating together and forming an instant community with a common purpose.

The musical team is led by violinist Judy Tarling, cellist Henrik Persson, vocal coach John Flinders and keyboard player and director Julian Perkins, while the production is by Restoration drama specialist Jack Edwards, assisted by the young British director Deborah Cohen.

This is the first ever collaboration between Benslow Music and North Hertfordshire College, whose students are involved in creating the set – based on original artwork by Salvador Dali - and in many other technical aspects of the production.

Tickets are priced at £12. Full time students may attend free of charge but prior booking is necessary.
