It takes seconds to learn and minutes to play, and is superb fun for one or more players. Each player uses a set of four candy colored poppers, each containing a different combination of lettered dice. Players pop the dice inside their poppers to match the letters on one of the 100 illustrated flash cards. Players have a ball using the poppers as they race to uncover letters to spell words before their opponents and before the 60 second timer runs out. By being the first player to successfully spell the word they cheer “Poppo!” and win the card and the round. The player with the most cards at the end of play wins the game.
The game has been well received by school administrators and teachers as a way of inspiring young minds and encouraging emerging readers to develop their skills in the classrooms. “Aside from the multitude of instructional benefits that so clearly qualify this game for parental purchase, the important thing is that it's something kids will want to play again and again.” says DeKoven. “There may be faster ways to teach reading or spelling or word recognition, but I don't think there's a way that is more fun than playing Poppo.”
