Solar Project Brightens the City of Highland

Highland Police Facility Goes Green and Saves Green

Highland, CA, April 07, 2012 --(PR.com)-- A native American proverb states that “we do not inherit the land from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” During an era of green washing, it’s refreshing to see a city walk the walk in terms of sustainable efforts.

The City of Highland has taken many strides towards creating a sustainable environment for its citizens as well as future generations. Next week the municipality will flip the switch on its newest green technology, a 41,550 Watt solar panel installation at the new Highland Police Department Facility with Sullivan Solar Power.

“We are thrilled to have been working with the environmentally progressive city of Highland to bring more clean energy to the region,” said Daniel Sullivan, founder and president of Sullivan Solar Power. “This solar installation project demonstrates the City’s commitment not only to the environment, but also to fiscal responsibility.”

The solar project consists of two separate photovoltaic (PV) arrays with a total of 210 American-made Siliken solar panels. Sullivan Solar Power explained that they pride themselves on using locally made products to support both the regional and national economy.

While the construction of the facility is still being completed, the new police department building is now producing clean, renewable energy on-site. The project has been designed to be a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified building, and the solar power system will attribute credits toward this green building certification.

“The City of Highland continues its commitment to sustainability projects in our community and City facilities,” said Highland City Manager, Joseph Hughes. “The City strives for LEED certification in all of our new buildings and is in the process of retrofitting existing facilities with renewable energy technology to take advantage of the benefits.”

The police department is one of several LEED Certified buildings the City of Highland has built in recent years as a part of a commitment to creating efficient buildings. LEED provides a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. It also teaches the community about sustainable practices.

“This is the second solar project we have done for a Highland facility and it is great to see that there is such a strong commitment coming from its leadership,” said Sullivan. “The city is setting an example by implementing sustainable practices, while saving taxpayers money.”
