Easter 2012: Brits Staying Close to Home for Less Than 50 Euros

Dublin and Belfast identified as the top spots to travel to for Easter whilst others head for fun in the Spanish sun resorts of Alicante, Barcelona and Malaga.

Chiasso, Switzerland, April 15, 2012 --(PR.com)-- As the daylight of Spring arrives, the craving to travel once again arrives with the Easter break providing the perfect opportunity to do so. With schools off and many people taking advantage of the bank holidays, it is no surprise that many people are choosing to book holidays abroad. Bravofly.co.uk, one of the biggest European players in the online travel industry, has analysed the data based on bookings made by UK passengers and where they are going for the Easter holidays.

Thanks to the budget-friendly deals available, Ireland has emerged as the most popular destination with Belfast and Dublin covering the top two spots. And travelling a little further afield to complete the podium is the Italian capital of Rome, which is consistently a top travel destination for the UK market.

With the full two weeks not being available for all, the majority have chosen weekend breaks with the average trip being around 4 days, therefore low cost flights have emerged as the most convenient: around 65% of travellers have chosen to fly low cost whilst 35% have gone with more traditional airlines.

Almost 90% of the bookings have come in the post-Christmas rush with flights continuing to be booked as we speak. The average spend per route is just over €100 meaning that passengers are still managing to profit from the fact that there are a wide range of cheap flights available up until the last minute.

“Easter 2012 is dedicated to saving and short breaks. Our analysis shows that those who book flights on Bravofly.co.uk mostly choose a low-cost airline,” says Fabio Cannavale, Executive President and Co-Founder of the Bravofly Group.

“The crisis,” continues Fabio Cannavale, “makes travellers more price-conscious, however they still do not want to give up their holiday time and continue to book online in order to find the best combination of quality and price. This trend is reflected in the strong growth recorded within all the Bravofly Group compared to previous years. It also signals that the travel industry is changing and consumers are feeling increasingly confident when booking online today.”

These are based on bookings made on Bravofly.co.uk and Bravofly.com by those travelling from the UK between March 30, 2012 and 16 April, 2012, for bookings made as of 2nd March, 2012.

Most popular destinations

With Easter coming early again this year maybe the temptation of a belated St Patricks Day getaway has convinced the majority of people to book flights to the Irish capital, Dublin. Either way it’s a United Kingdom and Eire capitals theme with an average cost per route of €49 combined with €45 to go Belfast (sitting in second place) and even London.

Whilst other European capitals of Amsterdam, Prague and Rome are all reachable for less than €80 per route.

The Airlines

Looking at the data compiled for the Easter period, bookings show that low cost airlines are dominating (65%) compared to the more traditional airlines (35%).

Duration of Trip

This period of the year has always been one of the most popular times to travel abroad due to both the school holidays and bank holidays. Of those who booked on Bravofly.co.uk and Bravofly.com the majority of them either chose to take a short break or a whole week away. Of the 57% of people who booked for a period of between 2-5 days a city break is the favoured option with Dublin and Belfast leading the way, closely followed by Rome, Prague and Amsterdam.

Those opting for a longer stay away (6-10 days) are heading for fun in the sun with the Spanish resorts of Malaga, Alicante and Barcelona topping the list. Finally, of the smaller amount of bookings whose trips were between 11-16 days, longhaul flights to destinations such as Bangkok and Johannesburg are those most booked.
