Outstanding Stewardship Award Presented to Snipes Academy of Arts and Design in Wilmington

Lower Cape Fear Stewardship Development Coalition Honors Project for New Hanover County Schools Designed by SfL+a Architects

Wilmington, NC, April 20, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Robbie Ferris, president and CEO of SfL+a Architects (http://www.sfla.biz), has announced that the Snipes Academy of Arts and Design, a project designed by the firm for New Hanover County Schools, recently received the Outstanding Stewardship Award from the Lower Cape Fear Stewardship Development Coalition, an organization dedicated to recognizing outstanding development that protects, conserves, improves and provides awareness of the Lower Cape Fear region’s natural resources. The award, a nomination for which was submitted by New Hanover County Schools, was presented in an awards ceremony on Thursday, Feb. 23 at the Wilmington Regional Association of Realtors. The Outstanding Stewardship Award is the highest level of distinction available in the Stewardship Development Program.

In order to receive recognition for the Snipes Academy of Arts & Design, New Hanover County Schools and SfL+a Architects demonstrated the project’s commitment to water quality protection, green building, wetland preservation, community outreach, habitat and vegetation protection. Other deciding factors for the Outstanding Stewardship Award included long-term management, site inventory, natural project amenities and revitalization of the existing project site.

The Snipes Academy of Arts & Design is an 89,850square-foot Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Registered educational facility. Features of the two-story structure include a full gymnasium and 500-seat auditorium covered by an Energy Star hybrid built-up roof. The facility will serve 600 New Hanover County students.

- Other cost-saving features of the energy efficient building include face brick exterior walls, Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) interior walls, interior painted CMU and gypsum board on metal studs, acoustical tile ceilings and vinyl tile floors, aluminum windows with insulated glass, hollow metal door frames and wood doors.
