Water Report Points to Promising Rafting Season on California’s Lower Kern River

California's Lower Kern River projected to have outstanding summer rafting conditions.

Wofford Heights, CA, April 21, 2012 --(PR.com)-- At first glance, the April 1st snow survey released by the California Department of Water Resources doesn’t appear promising for river recreationists. The report showed California’s mountain snowpack to be 55% of average, compared to 164% at this time last year.

Keith Stephens, General Manager of Kern River Outfitters, a river company offering trips on the Kern, greeted the news differently. “We will have a short season on those sections of the Kern that rely on snowmelt but trips on the Lower Kern will run all summer on water accumulated from last winter’s near record snowfall,” he said. Stephens continued, “Last year, the huge snowpack made forecasting rafting conditions difficult. This summer, we should have flows that are consistent and perfect for trips on the Lower Kern.”

Stephens anticipates that rafting trips on the snow-dependent Upper and Forks of the Kern River will begin mid-April and run through mid-June. The Lower Kern, where the company runs most of its trips, originates at Lake Isabella and will have ideal rafting conditions throughout the summer. Kern River Outfitters offers one-day and overnight trips on the Lower Kern, which features Class III-IV rapids.

The furthest south of any Sierra river, the Kern is a popular rafting destination from southern California cities. Driving time from Los Angeles to Kern River Outfitters’ rafting center in Wofford Heights is about 3 hours, significantly less than the time it takes to reach other California rafting destinations that are further north. With gas prices playing an ever-increasing role in vacation choices, outfitters expect rafting trips on the Kern River to grow in popularity in 2012.
