William Peace University Unveils New Minor in Women Studies

Four-Year Baccalaureate University to Offer New Courses as Part of 18-Hour Interdisciplinary Minor to be Offered in Fall 2012 Semester.

Raleigh, NC, April 22, 2012 --(PR.com)-- William Peace University (http://www.peace.edu), a private four-year university located in downtown Raleigh, has announced the addition of a new interdisciplinary minor in women studies available for students beginning fall 2012. Students participating in the program will take 18 hours of classes including a new 3-hour introductory foundation course, a 3-hour internship or honors thesis related to women studies, and 12 hours of existing courses in such departments as English, political science, and psychology. The minor will place an emphasis on understanding the ways in which gender and power are socially, politically and economically constructed, as well as identify strategies for social and political activism. One full-time faculty member, Dr. Kayce Meginnis-Payne, will serve as coordinator for the program.

The minor is being added to reflect William Peace University’s mission to prepare students for meaningful careers and ethical citizenship, as well as its support of gender equality. Perceptions of efficacy and professional goals are often shaped by systems that create and sustain traditional gender-role expression and power relations. By learning tools to identify and deconstruct those systems, students can generate new ideas about careers and the role of work. The minor can also assist students in understanding and applying principles of ethical decision-making.

Quotes:
“Establishing a minor in women studies is a natural progression for us at William Peace University, as there is already existing student interest in pursuing this program and faculty in place to teach all of its aspects,” said Debra M. Townsley, Ph.D., president of William Peace University. “Addressing gender issues through our curriculum will provide a strong expansion to our course offerings, particularly as we become a coeducational institution this fall. This minor will be an excellent option for both men and women to consider taking in conjunction with their major studies.”
