Bruss Landscaping Wins Unilock Award of Excellence Ecological Paving Installation

Suburban Chicago landscape design/build firm tops all Midwest-region projects for water-permeable driveway installation that eases storm water run-off problems.

Wheaton, IL, April 27, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Bruss Landscaping was named the winner of the 2011 Unilock Award of Excellence in the category of “Best Permeable Paver Installation.” Water-permeable paving products are a recent innovation, with the primary purpose of allowing water from rainfall or other sources to drain through the pavement, instead of running off into already over-burdened storm sewers.

Bruss Landscaping is leading the industry by utilizing permeable pavers in residential installations. Most permeable paving installations occur on large commercial or municipal building projects, parking lots, and plazas where the attainment of LEED points is of great consequence. Using permeable paving for residential building projects is not driven by the desire to attain LEED points, but to resolve lot coverage and/or stormwater run-off issues identified on a particular residential lot by the respective municipality.

The award-winning project, designed and installed by Bruss Landscaping, is located in the town of Glen Ellyn, IL, which has a strong heritage of architectural excellence and traditional design. With a mandate that the entire driveway be of a permeable material to meet building permit requirements, Arnold Kroeze, Registered Landscape Architect for Bruss Landscaping developed a plan for a functional and aesthetically pleasing driveway that would accommodate a four-car garage, as well as complement the home’s traditional style. The 150-foot long driveway would need to hold up to frequent use and the harshness of Chicago winters.

Selecting the elegant and durable Eco-Priora paver by Unilock, the Bruss installation crews followed the rigorous installation specifications unique to permeable pavers, as outlined by the manufacturer.

“The Bruss permeable paver driveway installation was one of the first residential projects in the Village of Glen Ellyn, but I see this increasing as villages seek to come up with ways to handle rainwater on small lots with big houses,” comments Kasy Irwin, marketing coordinator for Unilock Chicago. Permeability of surface materials for on-site management of storm water follows guidelines set forth in the Sustainable Sites Initiative, now in the final year of its pilot program.

Bruss Landscaping’s winning entry beat out all other projects from across the 4-state Midwest region to win the top honor. In addition to receiving a cash prize and award certificate, images of the award-winning project are featured in the 2012 Unilock catalog and idea book which has a distribution size of 150,000 copies.
