The killing of Trayvon Martin, a Black 17 year old in Florida, has set off a storm of debates about racial profiling and race relations. Many co-workers, neighbors, family, and friends are at odds on this matter. The majority of the country can sympathize with the parents on losing a son in such an unexpected and violent manner. However, the majority of citizens do not understand the passion and emotions that have erupted in Black communities across this nation. Dr. Daryl Green, a noted lecturer and columnist, releases the second edition of one of his books to further expand the dialogue concerning the plight of Blacks as it relates to effective leadership.

What is going on in Black America? Have we all gone crazy? Our children live their lives through television and million-dollar superstars. They often see examples of adults who have made it - the wrong way. Is there anybody who will stand up to the moral decay of our age? Are there any leaders who can escape the vicious media microscope? Are there any leaders left in the Black community? Black people have been studied, evaluated, tested, researched, and analyzed to death. America has already written Black people out of its future.

Look at all of the negative statistics. Jeneen Jones, a noted writer, analyzes society views of the Black man in her article, "The Truth About Black Crime - American Culture." She notes that Black men are about six times more likely than White men to be admitted to prison during their lifetimes. According to the Youth Law Center, Black youths account for 26 percent of all juvenile arrests, but they account for 44 percent of juveniles who are detained, 46 percent of those who go to adult court, and 58 percent who go to prison.

Dr. Green has done extensive research on developing leaders for both today and for the future. His last book, Job Strategies for the 21st Century, has been rated number one on Amazon.com. Dr. Green notes, “Leadership will continue to emerge in the Black community. There are so many negative images of black leadership despite having President Barack Obama as a role model.” Dr. Green wrote his book, Awakening the Talent Within: A Guide for the Next Generation of Leaders, as a wake-up call to young people. This month marks the 2nd edition of this book being published.

Dr. Green builds the book from W.E.B. Du Bois’ concept of the Talented Tenth. Dr. Du Bois was a writer, and prominent Black scholar who led for social change during critical times of civil rights. Dr. Green explains, “The Talented Tenth are those individuals who are willing to use their gifts and talents - people who have invested in themselves to reach a certain level of excellence. This goes beyond social class. Black America has many problems to solve; however, we must deal with the things we can control.” Dr. Green advocates Black people, as well as others, should become empowered to change their own destinies.

Awakening the Talents Within is available online at Amazon.com and other book retailers. You can also view the book trailer on Youtube.com at http://youtu.be/pUSY2Ru4j7M.
