Murray Shoots Five-Under Par in the Rex Hospital Open Junior Invitational to Claim First Place and Earn an Exemption into the Nationwide Rex Hospital Open

On Sunday, fifty-six of North Carolina’s elite junior golfers competed in the Rex Hospital Open Junior Invitational for their chance to earn an exemption into the prestigious Nationwide Tour Event, the Rex Hospital Open at TPC Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh, NC. The Junior Invitational is a thirty-six hole, one-day event at TPC Wakefield Plantation presented by the Tarheel Junior Golf Tour and the Tarheel Golf Foundation. Raleigh, NC, May 30, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Grayson Murray of Raleigh, NC shot a five under par (70-67-137) to qualify for the Rex Hospital Open. Murray, a future Demon Deacon at Wake Forest University, had a stellar performance to edge out fellow competitors Ben Schlottman of Advance, NC by one stroke and Kendrick Vinar of Chapel Hill, NC by three strokes. The second round proved to be a real challenge for many of the junior golfers with the temperature rising and fatigue starting to show, but Murray overcame the challenges and was the only player to shoot under par in round two. Murray finished strong with four birdies on the last seven holes, including consecutive birdies on the last two holes to secure a first place victory.

Murray, who is no stranger to pressure, stayed focused through thirty-six holes to earn his second exemption into the Rex Hospital Open in three years. In 2010, he claimed a spot in the Rex Hospital Open and became the second youngest golfer to ever make the cut in a Nationwide Tour Event with a second round score of 66.

The Rex Hospital Open begins on Thursday. Murray, who will be attending Wake Forest University in the fall on the Arnold Palmer Scholarship, hopes to end his junior golfing career with a bang.

The Tarheel Junior Golf Tour, is an elite junior golf tour with over 1400 members and based in the Central North Carolina region, which includes Pinehurst, Raleigh-Durham, Greensboro and Charlotte.
