The Red Hot Horn Dawgs (and Friends) Use Music to Fight Brain Cancer

Three bands and national trumpet icon Mark "The Loveman" Pender are performing in Middleton July 22 to raise money for brain cancer research.

Middleton, WI, June 26, 2012 --(PR.com)-- A local band will join talent from around the country to raise money for the UW Carbone Cancer Center on Sunday, July 22 at Capital Brewery in Middleton.

The Red Hot Horn Dawgs—a long time Madison-area cover band—will join the Screaming Cucumbers from Milwaukee, Soul Candy & the Traffic Jam from Knoxville, TN, and nationally known trumpeter Mark Pender (seen nightly on the Conan show,) at the Gray Matters Music Jam (GMMJ.)

The GMMJ is in memory of Steve Semmann, who died after a long battle with brain cancer in 2007 at age 44. His ties to the UW Marching band shaped the music lineup for this event.

Semmann was a trumpet player, and occasionally filled in as a substitute with the Horn Dawgs, according to Horn Dawg leader Carl Gitchel.

"Steve was in the UW Band around the time I was," remembers Gitchel. "Each band at the GMMJ has Badger Band alumni in its ranks, some were close friends of his. We're pretty involved in this emotionally."

The addition of Pender to the lineup reflects the UW Band ties. He's performed multiple times at the annual UW Varsity Band spring concerts. He'll play with both horn bands, the Horn Dawgs and Traffic Jam.

Tickets and additional details for the Gray Matters Music Jam are available through www.graymattersmusicjam.com.
