Ulmon, Indie Developer, Launches Its iOS Best-Seller App on Android – Challenges Google Maps

City Maps 2Go, an iOS bestseller app for two years, has just been launched for Android on Google Play. Tailored for travelers, map-centric City Maps 2Go offers features, which travelers miss in other map and travel apps.

Sunnyvale, CA, July 04, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The modern traveler’s worst enemies are spotty network coverage at home, and high data roaming charges abroad. Smart phones and mobile apps, that require being online to access maps, travel recommendations and tourist information are worthless in such circumstances. "We set out to solve that problem, handing modern travelers an app, that makes them independent of network availability," says Florian Kandler, co-founder and CMO of Ulmon.

With City Maps 2Go travelers can pre-load maps of cities, regions and counties to the smartphone. Once loaded, they work completely off-line. Ulmon’s own vector maps technology on top of openstreetmap data (the rising star in the battle for maps) delivers detailed maps on highest zoom levels while taking up very little memory on the device.

Maps also contain millions of places and points of interest. An additional preload enriches the map with full Wikipedia articles (text and images) of the top places and tourist attractions, turning the app into a global travel guide.

"Everything works completely without internet connection. Even searching addresses and places in off-line mode, which is not possible with the products of our biggest rivals in our market," explains Tymon Wiedemair, co-founder and head of product at Ulmon. Maps are also much larger than the few-miles radius in other apps. And the memory it takes up on the device is a fraction of bigger competitors.

Virtually every place on the globe is available - 7,800 maps in 175 countries. And Ulmon’s support team creates any map of more exotic places on request within a few days.

The Android version on Google Play is free and includes five map downloads and "Wiki Plus" (the pre-load of full Wikipedia articles) for one map. An in-app purchase is available, to upgrade to unlimited downloads of maps and Wiki Plus. Users approve of Ulmon’s offering with high average ratings of 4 ½ stars.
