Artists from the Chicago Mosaic School Invited to Exhibit Work at Prix Picassiette in Chartres, France
Artist/faculty of the Chicago Mosaic School are honored to be representing the United States at the Prix Picassiette International Biennial Exhibition in Chartres, France.
Chicago, IL, October 05, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The Prix Picassiette, a prestigious international biennial exhibition, will be held October 17-November 18, 2012 in Chartres, France. The biennial was created in 1996 with the formation of the 3R Association, which promotes mosaic arts and history and was inspired by Raymond Isadore, renowned for covering his house ("maison picassiette") with mosaics in the city of Chartres.
This important exhibition consists of juried contemporary mosaics from around the world, and only a few select artists are invited. Three faculty members of The Chicago Mosaic School are honored to be representing America, where mosaics are breaking new ground in the contemporary arts scene. CMS is the first and largest institution for Mosaic Arts education in the Americas.
Karen Ami, Founder and Director of The Chicago Mosaic School, Matteo Randi, CMS Educational Director, and Sue Giannotti, CMS Visiting Faculty will be presenting several works of American contemporary mosaic art. In addition to the exhibition, Ms. Ami will be speaking to this international audience on educating students and the public about classical and modern Mosaic Arts in the United States.
Ms. Ami has been a working artist in the United States for over 30 years and is known for her colorful sculptures and organic forms. She founded The Chicago Mosaic School in early 2005 due to a lack of academic and theoretical education in Mosaic Arts in the United States. She has dedicated her artistic direction and studio practice to this historical and powerful art form.
Matteo Randi, an Italian-born, classically trained mosaic artist, brings master mosaic skills and the love and knowledge of its history to his own art. He trained and learned from the age of 9 from the mosaic masters in Ravenna, known by many as the mosaic capital of the world. Now creating art and teaching courses in Chicago, Randi is known for his beautiful mosaics, his technical precision and for his relaxed and informative teaching style.
Sue Giannotti is a frequent and much sought after teacher at The Chicago Mosaic School. She began delving deeply into mosaic theory and design several years after studying the art in Venice, Italy. Giannotti continues to create cutting edge works of mosaic art and leads insightful discussions on contemporary art in classes and workshops at CMS.
Although individually, their work is aesthetically different, the three share a great respect for classical and contemporary mosaics, along with drawing, painting and sculpture. All three have studied in depth with Verdiano Marzi, one of the most well-known and beloved mosaic masters in Europe.
The Chicago Mosaic School offers a multitude of classes and workshops, many using the traditional hammer and hardie, to master precision cutting with various materials, including marble, stone, smalti and other glass. The theories and artistic skills of line, ‘andamento’, and technique are taught with both ancient and contemporary mosaic approaches.
The Prix Picassiette Biennial runs October 27 - November 18, 2012, in Chartres France.
