Artist Jason Craighead Wins Metro Bravo Award - Again

Raleigh, NC, July 11, 2007 --(PR.com)-- For the third consecutive year, Raleigh-based artist Jason Craighead has received a Metro Bravo Award for best regional artist from Metro Magazine, a monthly publication covering a 22-county region that includes Raleigh, the Research Triangle, and Eastern North Carolina. The awards showcase readers’ favorites in various categories.

Craighead, 36, is an abstract expressionist best known for his predominantly large-scale canvases that combine acrylic, oil pastel, and graphite in multiple layers of color, lines, and drips. In his most recent work, all but random segments of color and line are “painted out” behind thin white pigment, evoking a sense of peering through a veil to discover what lies within. The spontaneous marks on the canvas are often inspired by elements of the urban landscape. He describes his work as “a purely intuitive process as I’m acting and responding to what appears on the canvas… My work is not about storytelling in the now, it is more about creating a body of work that will evolve, grow and change over my lifetime.”

He has also been an active participant in the Raleigh arts community for many years. He has donated numerous paintings to charitable art auctions, including the Triangle AIDS Alliance’s annual Works of Heart auction and a Habitat for Humanity fundraiser. He has also served as a juror and signature artist for Works of Heart, and as a juror for the Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh and the Greensboro Center for Visual Arts Members’ Show. In 2000, Raleigh’s annual spring festival, Artsplosure, commissioned him as Signature Artist to create a painting that would become the image of its marketing campaign. More recently, he has become a member of the City of Raleigh Arts Commission’s (RAC) 30th Anniversary Committee.

Jason Craighead is represented by Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, Center of the Earth Gallery in Charlotte, Broadhurst Gallery in Pinehurst, New Elements Gallery in Wilmington, and Anne Irwin Fine Art in Atlanta, Georgia.
