Network-Centric Performance Management - A Diamond in the Rough: Says Metanoia

Experts from Cisco, ADVA, OPNET, InfoVista, Linked In, TATA, TELUS, and several eco-system players at an industry Roundtable convened by Metanoia, Inc. opined that network-centric performance management, although critical for operators, must evolve. Obtaining service-level insights, using performance monitoring data effectively, defining accurate metrics and SLAs, fault isolation across boundaries, organizational cooperation are areas where industry consensus and cooperation is needed.

Mountain View, CA, October 20, 2012 --(PR.com)-- While cooperation between operators in different network segments, from wireless access, through the middle-mile, to the last-mile data center is critical due to evolving enterprise and end-user communication patterns – high mobility, large bandwidth, rapid service migration – there are still significant challenges to be addressed, concluded experts on Metanoia, Inc.’s Roundtable on network-centric performance management – a well-attended affair, with a dozen+ experts deliberating areas like service-level metrics, data aggregation, standards, metrics & SLAs, & fault isolation.

Ning So of TATA observed, “Network-level performance abstraction is the required building block or foundation for service-level performance assurance and guarantees!” Zaid Ali, Senior Mgr, Global Network Engineering, Linked In said, “Content providers use performance monitoring data heavily for fault detection, real-time troubleshooting, capacity planning, but are today building their own monitoring frameworks to span from network- to application-layer.”

Aamer Akhter, Technical Leader, Cisco added, “The reality is that the complexity of the network, shared dependencies between applications, inconsistent monitoring methodologies, and multiple network domains increase time to resolution for services that end users want SLAs for. Unease with reliability of the cloud will force the creation of tools/techniques to provide better SLAs, although this has not happened yet.”

Gordon Bolt, VP Engg, OPNET outlined “Finding a single expert that understands how to troubleshoot across the application, LTE, IP/MPLS core, optical transport, inter-AS peering components is nearly impossible. But, systems can be built that help an expert in one domain provide documentation of relevant details and context to an expert in another domain.”

“While standardization has been a key to networking, effort on the uniformization of the management plane has not been that consistent,” noted Vikas Trehan, SVP Strategy, InfoVista. Added Benoit Claise, IETF Area Director O&M, “Today, there are measurements within domains, but no correlation across them and no clarity on whether operators wish to share SLA info.”

Dr. Vishal Sharma, Metanoia, Inc. wrapped up reiterating “Such dialog is the key to the eco-system arriving at creative solutions to help operators improve performance & profitability!” To participate in this engaging dialog, and interact with the distinguished experts, register Now at bit.ly/QFrnaQ.
