Want to Lose Weight for the New Year? Why Starting on January 1st is Too Late
When the calendar flips to a new year it may already be too late to make lifestyle changes, according to weight loss expert Helen M. Ryan. The Amazon best-selling author of 21 Days to Change Your Body (and Your Life) explains why, and what people can do to make their 2013 resolutions stick.
“The secret to successful New Year’s resolutions is to start now, and not wait until January 1st,” says formerly obese fitness pro and author Helen M. Ryan, who lost 82 pounds. “Making a bunch of changes all at once sets you up for failure. Who hasn’t found themselves starving and exhausted by January 15th?” Ryan has certainly been there. As she writes in her book, “I tried to diet a million times, and a million times I failed. Day after day, Monday after Monday, New Years after New Years I would vow to start fresh.”
According to Ryan, it takes 21 days to change a habit. Small steps taken early—before the Holidays begin—could result in an entirely new set of positive habits by January 1st. These positive habits can give people the momentum they need to keep their resolutions alive and kicking long after others’ resolutions have faded away.
21 Days to Change Your Body (and Your Life) uses this ‘baby steps’ method to change habits, which is what gives lasting results. “No one wants to feel hungry all the time, and no one wants to sacrifice all the time,” says Ryan. Too much sacrifice can lead to failure, as the nation’s alarmingly high, and steadily growing, obesity rate shows.
An advocate of the ‘lifestyle change’ rather than ‘diet’ way of thinking, Ryan encourages readers to find what works for them, and to become the healthiest they can be while still enjoying life…and the occasional cookie. She guides people on both an emotional and physical level by sharing tips for a healthy lifestyle as well as suggestions for overcoming mental obstacles to weight loss.
Ryan encourages people to not wait for a specific date or event to begin losing weight and becoming healthier. As she says in her book, “Start now. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Tomorrow starts today.”
