Beyond Bullying, Fair Weather Friends: Loony Lori Published by Outskirts Press

Children’s author Karen Lee Snyder shows the perennial problems children face with finding true friendship and avoiding bullying and provides an innovative lesson in solutions for her young readers.

Lake Elsinore, CA, November 11, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Author Karen Lee Snyder announced today the release of Loony Lori, published by Outskirts Press. Snyder’s new full color, juvenile fiction book shows children that the adults in their lives were once kids themselves, just like them, and that it is possible to find true friendship.

Young Lori dresses differently than the other girls her age, and at school recess she even likes to play with the boys. She’s unlike any of the other girls in her third grade class so when one of the most popular girls, Marsha, comes up to her and asks her where she got her cowboy jacket, Lori is delighted.

The two girls form an immediate bond and as they walk home from school together every day they make cross-your-heart-and-hope-to-die promises to each other. Soon, however, the other girls begin turning against Marsha and start calling her new friend “Loony Lori.” Marsha has to choose sides.

Confused, Marsha decides to avoid being teased herself and shuns her new friend. Lori must now walk home alone, heartbroken. She cannot figure out why Marsha has suddenly changed her mind, but ultimately she is able to learn a valuable lesson on what true friendship is.

Loony Lori is set in the 1950’s and although the clothes and games have changed, this setting allows children to see that the problems they face in school while growing up haven’t changed much at all. Author Snyder also offers her readers a simple and direct language that children can relate to and that makes it easy for them to grasp the concept of a fair-weather friend.

Snyder and her husband collaborated as author and illustrator on this accessible and powerful story that teaches when you can, and when you can’t, count on your friends and what you can do about bullying.

Loony Lori is available on-line in paperback through Amazon and Barnes and Noble and at www.outskirtspress.com/bookstore for a maximum trade discount in quantities of ten or more.
