Allsup and NFCA Celebrate Family Caregivers in November

National Family Caregivers Association and Allsup share why family caregivers matter with poster series and online forum, Nov. 29, 2012.

Belleville, IL, November 26, 2012 --(PR.com)-- November is a time for giving thanks, and an appropriate time to show gratitude to the more than 65 million family caregivers in the U.S. Allsup, a nationwide Social Security Disability Insurance representation company, is pleased to join with the National Family Caregivers Association (NFCA) to thank, support, educate and empower family caregivers during National Family Caregivers (NFC) Month in November.

“Celebrating family caregivers during NFC Month raises awareness of family caregiver issues, acknowledges their contributions and efforts and increases support for family caregivers,” said NFCA CEO John Schall.

NFCA has coordinated the annual observance since 1994. This year’s theme is “Family Caregivers Matter.” According to NFCA:

Family caregivers matter to their loved ones, spending an average of 20 hours per week providing care—many of them care for their loved ones around the clock.

Family caregivers matter in making sure that medications are taken and that doctor appointments are kept. More often than not, family caregivers are the managers of their loved one’s medication regimen, seeing to it that medicines are taken on time and that different medicines prescribed by different doctors are properly reconciled.

Family caregivers matter in reducing healthcare costs and avoiding hospital readmissions. Family caregivers provide the lion’s share of care and support for those with chronic care needs—approximately $450 billion of unpaid care each year.

Family caregivers matter to each other. Family caregivers often feel isolated and alone. Just knowing they can reach out to 65 million other family caregivers going through many of the same challenges can be a great consolation.

Allsup and NFCA will host an online forum on “Why Family Caregivers Matter,” Thursday, Nov. 29, from 1 to 2 p.m. (EST), at theAllsup True Help® Disability Web Expo. Caregivers, care recipients and those who work with them are encouraged to attend and share their thoughts and questions.

Register by going to WebExpo.Allsup.com. After registering, you can visit the Expo any time through Dec. 26.

On the day of the forum, go to NFCA’s booth in the Empowerment Exhibit Hall to join the open chat. Visitors to NFCA’s booth also will be able to download NFC month posters and other resources.

Recent posts to Allsup’s Facebook page illustrate both the diversity of family caregivers and their shared experiences:

“Family caregiving is not just an eldercare issue but a lifespan issue including ‘well-spouses’ and parents of children with special needs who may need lifelong care.”

“Family caregivers (of all ages) matter because they are the invisible spine of the long term healthcare system and are there 24/7 doing the very best that they can, often with little appreciation for the many sacrifices they make.”

“Family caregivers matter because they make a huge positive difference in the quality of care of their loved ones.”
