Mikhail Baryshnikov, a native of Riga, Latvia, was born in 1948 in Latvia and began studying ballet as a young boy in 1957. Later entering the prestigious Vaganova Academy in Leningrad, he went on to become a principal dancer with the Kirov ballet.

In 1974, he left the Soviet Union and danced many of the great ballet companies from around the world including the New York City Ballet and worked with such dance luminaries as George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, as well as 10-years as Artistic Director of the American Ballet Theatre.
